Application Technology

The application process has a direct impact on the appearance, the manufacturing and material costs, as well as on the long-term performance of the coated cookware.

A basic requirement for all coating processes is a thorough pre-treatment of the substrate. Degreasing, sandblasting with non-corrosive material, etching, lapping, brushing or chemical conversion are the most common processes. Subsequently, the coating material is applied, and finally it is baked at temperatures between 200 and 420 °C. Let’s have a look at the actual application technologies:

Spray Coating

The almost universal application technology leading to a perfect surface appearance on all types of substrates is the use of spraying technology. 2-4 layers are applied with a total coating thickness up to 50 μm. Special types of coating material allow also single coats. The disadvantage is the so-called »overspray« which increases the material costs. Conclusion: applicable for all quality levels, especially for premium cookware and professional demands


An economical one layer or multilayer application on discs ("pre-coat"). The applicator roll often leaves striations on the surface, influencing the appearance (»chicken tracks«). The dry-film thickness is between 12 and 25 μm. As the disc is formed into its final shape only after the coating and drying process, the substrate thickness is limited to 3 mm. Conclusion: very economical process preferably for »Special Offers«


An economical one layer or multilayer application on discs (»pre-coat«). The discs pass through a curtain formed by the liquid coating, on a conveyor belt, similar to the roller coating application, but with a perfectly smooth surface. The dry-film thickness is also in the same range as in roller coating. Conclusion: very economical process preferably for »Special Offers«


Coil coating is another pre-coat process, commonly used for highvolume bakeware. Large coils of mild or stainless steel (ECCS/TFS) or aluminium are coated by a reverse applicator roll, resulting in a very smooth and attractive appearance. The coated coils are then shipped to the bakeware producer, who punches out a flat sheet that is bent into the ultimate form. One or two coats are the preferred finish with a dry-film thickness between 10 and 20 μm. As with all pre-coat processes, the metal thickness is limited (< 2 mm). Conclusion: economical process, preferably used for bakeware
